Srinagar Soiree: A Thrilling Family Journey with Shreya
Have you ever felt like stepping into a living painting? That’s exactly how my family and I felt during our unforgettable trip to Kashmir!
Also, known as "Paradise on Earth," Kashmir is everything dreams are made of – and more. From snow-capped mountains to lush meadows, every moment of our trip was pure magic. Here’s a peek into our family’s incredible journey, peppered with tips to make your Kashmir trip truly memorable.
1. Start Your Adventure with Srinagar’s Houseboats
If you’re visiting Kashmir, staying in a houseboat on Dal Lake is a must! My parents and younger sister were absolutely thrilled by the idea. One of the most magical evenings of our trip was spent gliding across Dal Lake on a shikara, soaking in the golden sunset and the reflection of the surrounding mountains. Trust me, there’s nothing like waking up in a beautifully carved houseboat to the gentle ripples of water.
Tip: Choose a houseboat with good reviews for cleanliness and hospitality. Don’t miss the morning floating market where vendors sell fresh produce, flowers, and handicrafts on shikaras.
2. Savour the Flavours of Kashmiri Cuisine
Our trip wouldn’t have been complete without indulging in local delicacies. My dad loved the aromatic Rogan Josh, while my sister couldn’t get enough of the creamy Yakhni. And oh, the Kahwa tea! Each sip was like a warm hug in the chilly weather.
Tip: Try Wazwan, a traditional Kashmiri multi-course meal, and explore small eateries for authentic flavours.
3. Embrace the Beauty of Pahalgam
Pahalgam was our first stop, and it completely stole our hearts. The lush green meadows of Betaab Valley were straight out of a Bollywood movie (quite literally, as many films have been shot there!). My sister and I even tried our hands at horse riding, which was both exhilarating and a little nerve-wracking.
Tip: Hire a guide for a short trek to Aru Valley if you’re up for some adventure. And don’t forget to capture the breathtaking views!
4. Enjoy Family Moments by the Lidder River
Flowing through Pahalgam, the Lidder River is a perfect spot for a family picnic. We spent an afternoon here, dipping our feet in the icy-cold water and skipping stones. It’s one of those simple joys that leave lasting memories.
Tip: Pack some snacks and spend quality time by the river. If you’re feeling adventurous, try river rafting.
5. Get Mesmerized by Sonmarg’s Glaciers
Sonmarg, the "Meadow of Gold," was a sight to behold. We took a pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier, and it felt like entering a winter wonderland. My sister was overjoyed to see snow for the first time, and we had a blast throwing snowballs at each other.
Tip: Wear sturdy boots and warm clothing for the glacier visit. Negotiate pony ride prices beforehand.
6. Take the Gondola Ride in Gulmarg
Gulmarg was the highlight of our trip, especially for my dad, who’s a big fan of cable cars. The Gondola ride took us to the snow-draped Apharwat Peak, offering views that felt otherworldly. We tried sledging and even made a tiny snowman – it was pure joy.
Tip: Book Gondola tickets online in advance to avoid long queues. Level 2 of the ride is a must for the best views.
7. Explore Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens
Back in Srinagar, we spent a day strolling through the Mughal Gardens. Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh were bursting with vibrant flowers, and the soothing fountains added to the charm. My mom couldn’t stop clicking pictures, and honestly, every angle was Instagram-worthy.
Tip: Visit the gardens early in the morning for fewer crowds and the best lighting for photos.
8. Shop for Souvenirs in Srinagar’s Markets
From intricate Pashmina shawls to beautiful papier-mâché crafts, Srinagar’s markets are a treasure trove. My mom and I picked up some saffron and dry fruits, while my sister bought herself a pair of traditional Kashmiri earrings.
Tip: Don’t shy away from bargaining, and ensure you buy authentic products by shopping from government-certified stores.
9. Relish a Sunset at Dal Lake’s Boulevard Road
One of our most peaceful moments was watching the sunset from Boulevard Road. The sky turned shades of orange and pink, reflecting beautifully on Dal Lake. It was the perfect way to wrap up our Srinagar experience.
Tip: Grab some local street food while enjoying the view. The freshly roasted chestnuts were our favorite.
10. Experience Kashmiri Hospitality
The warmth of Kashmiri people made our trip even more special. From our houseboat host’s cheerful greetings to the helpful guides and shopkeepers, everyone we met left a mark on our hearts. Our driver, Mr. Dar Bilal, made our trip even more memorable with his fascinating insights, tips and jokes throughout the journey that kept us entertained.
Tip: Interact with locals to learn more about their culture and stories. It’s these connections that make your journey truly enriching.
