An Unexpected Affair with the Mountains: Amey’s Sikkim Trip Thrillophilia Review
Amey was predominantly a beach lover. But his wife has always been a mountain girl.
After stepping into his life, she has taken Amey to every hill station near New Delhi. Be it the hidden offbeat destinations in Himachal, the valleys of Uttarakhand or India’s own paradise, Kashmir.
At first, Amey resisted the idea of exploring the mountains. “Why would we want to climb all those hills when we could be lounging by the beach?” he would often say. But over time, his wife’s enthusiasm and the sheer beauty of the mountainous landscapes gradually wore him down.
The crisp air, serene lakes, and stunning views started to enchant him.
His wife, always seeking the next adventure, had a new destination in mind this time. So when both of them were planning out their last trip of the year 2023, she could not think of a better destination.
‘Let's do Sikkim and Darjeeling this time. Since you have already explored the northern Himalayas of the country, it's time for you to experience the north-east. “This time, you’ll get to see a different side of the mountains,” she promised, her eyes filled with excitement.
Hesitantly, Amey agreed, curious to see what made this part of the mountains so special.
Gangtok and its Beauty
Their journey began in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, where the vibrant streets welcomed them with open arms. As they stepped out of their vehicle, Amey was instantly captivated by the lively atmosphere.
“Look at all the colours!” he exclaimed, admiring the colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the delicious aromas wafting from local food stalls.
Their first adventure led them to Enchey Monastery, nestled atop a hill. Amey was taken aback by the tranquillity of the place. As his wife lit a butter lamp, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace wash over him.
“This is indeed different,” he admitted while staring at the intricately decorated walls and listening to the monks chant. It was a side of the Himalayas he had never experienced before, and it truly tugged at his heartstrings.
Later, they rode to Tsomgo Lake, a stunning glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Amey couldn’t believe the beauty before him. Riding a yak-drawn sled across the lake, he laughed with his wife, feeling as though they were in a winter wonderland.
The Magic of Pelling
Continuing their journey, the couple arrived in Pelling. This time, both of them were awe-struck at the breathtaking views of the mighty Kanchenjunga. Their trek to Khecheopalri Lake, often called the “Wishing Lake,” was an adventure in itself. The path was lined by pine trees, forests and vibrant wildflowers.
As they reached the lake, Amey stood in loss of words.
“I can see why people come here to make wishes,” he said, tossing a pebble into the lake with a smile. The moment felt magical, it felt as if it solidified his love for the mountains.
Their visit to the Pemayangtse Monastery was another highlight as it deepened his appreciation for the region's rich culture. The serenity had filled the air, that was both calming and inspiring.
Amey found himself contemplating life and the beauty of simplicity, something he had often overlooked in his busy tech-driven life.
Darjeeling, ‘The Queen of Hills'
After a week of exploring the beautiful landscapes of Sikkim, the couple made their way to Darjeeling. The colonial charm of the town greeted them warmly, with its manicured tea gardens and stunning views. Their first stop was the iconic Batasia Loop, where the panoramic views left Amey breathless.
“This feels like a dream,” he said, snapping photos of the lush green hills and the steam locomotive winding its way through the landscape. He couldn’t help but think how fortunate they were to experience this.
During their visit to a tea estate, Amey was fascinated by the meticulous process. While savouring the freshly brewed Darjeeling tea, “I never knew tea could be so complex,” he remarked.
Looking back at a journey of newfound love…
Sitting on a balcony overlooking the misty mountains of Darjeeling, Amey turned to his wife with a soft smile on his face. “I think I finally understand why you love the mountains so much,” he confessed, the realisation sinking in.
She beamed, her heart swelling with happiness. “I knew, at the end you would absolutely love it,” she replied, squeezing his hand tightly.
Amey fondly recalled how the entire journey- from visiting East, South, and West Sikkim to exploring Darjeeling- was seamless. “All the hotel bookings were great, and the set itinerary worked perfectly for us,” he had told his friends back home.
Thrillophilia’s attentive planning and their driver and guide Tilak Ji, who kept them engaged throughout the trip.
“The mountains taught me patience,” Amey realised as their flight ascended above the peaks, “and they strengthened us.”
