From Castles to Canals: Swati’s Danish Escape with Family
I’ve always dreamed of being able to take my family on an international adventure. Amazingly, that dream came true sooner than expected.
I was searching for the perfect travel destination, wanting something truly unique and beyond the usual spots like Dubai, Thailand, or the Maldives. I was also on the lookout for a reliable tour operator, asking my colleagues about the same. And that is when one of them recommended Thrilophilia and spoke so highly of it that I had to check it out.
I conveyed to Thrillophilia that I wanted a premium international travel plan that would offer unforgettable experiences with family. I also let them know that I wanted a chill trip with absolutely no hassle. So, they suggested that I go through their Denmark tour packages, and those seemed like the perfect fit for our trip.
Now that our destination was finalised and other necessities like accommodation, meals, tickets and local transfers were taken care of, I simply relaxed and prepared myself for a big fat family adventure.
So, without further ado, let me quickly take you through the standout moments of my five-day-long Denmark family trip.!
Making the Most of Leisure Days..!
I wanted a minimum of two days of leisure on the trip so that we could explore the city a bit at our own pace. In my opinion, you have not fully explored a place, if you have just covered the touristy spots. I wanted leisure days so that I could discover some hidden gems, talk to locals, explore various cafes and cuisines and simply have enough time to admire the beauty around me.
And that’s exactly what my family and I did….!
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the city's charming cafes. Copenhagen is known for its coffee culture, and I found myself visiting The Coffee Collective often. They crafted the most delicious coffee that I had ever tasted, really!
Another cafe worth mentioning is the La Glace, a beautiful old-school café serving mouthwatering pastries. Here, I got to try the famous Danish Kringle pastry, which was nothing short of a treat.
I also took time to explore some of the city’s lesser-known sites, one such was the Assistens Cemetery. It was a quiet and peaceful place, situated amidst lush greenery where some of Denmark’s most famous figures, including Hans Christian Andersen, are buried. It was a perfect spot for self-reflection, away from the usual tourist spots.
While we were making the best use of our leisure time in Copenhagen, we didn’t miss a visit to the Botanical Garden. It was one of the most beautiful gardens that I had come across with a wide variety of plant species, collected from all over the world. It was the perfect refreshing break from the usual hustle and bustle of city life.
One of my favourite activities was looking for the best souvenir for our trip. I am not even sure how many shops we searched to get the perfect souvenir pieces that would remind us of this trip. Ultimately, after browsing a lot, we purchased Little Mermaid figurines, Danish butter cookies, postcards and some fridge magnets.
A Classic Canal Tour
The Copenhagen canal tour sightseeing was an unforgettable experience! As we cruised through the city’s picturesque canals, we were treated to stunning views of the city's most iconic landmarks-
The boat ride took us along the harbour, where I could admire the colourful buildings of Nyhavn, a vibrant place full of charming houses. We also passed the famous Little Mermaid statue, which looked even more enchanting from the boat. The tour included the majestic views of the Royal Danish Opera House and the Amalienborg Palace, home to the Danish royal family.
Our guide was informative and entertaining, sharing interesting facts about each location as we cruised along. If you ask me, this canal tour is the perfect way to explore Copenhagen’s waterfront as well as its most renowned attractions all at once!
A Day in Sweden!
Another reason why I loved Thrillophilia’s package is because I got to explore two countries in just one trip. I mean, how fun is that…!
In Sweden, we got to cover two gorgeous cities, Malmo and Lund.
Starting with Malmo, this city offered an enchanting mix of modernity and history that truly captivated me. I took my family to the iconic Turning Torso, the tallest building in Scandinavia, from where we got to enjoy the panoramic views of this city. We also visited the beautiful Malmo Castle and walked around the vibrant Lilla Torg square which was filled with charming cafes and boutiques.
Lund, on the other hand, felt like a hidden gem. Its old-world charm was evident while exploring the snaking cobblestone streets and the grand Lund Cathedral. The city’s cosy and laid-back vibe made it the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. And this is not just me saying, my whole family had the same opinion about this tour.
The Sweet Nostalgia
While we were flying back to India from Denmark, my parents said one thing to me with a big smile on their faces, “We are very proud of you!”
Listening to these words made every penny and all the effort worth it! At that moment, I felt literally on top of the world. I was happy to see that after all these years of struggle and hardships, I was finally at a place where I could take care of my family.
This trip made me realise that I have achieved everything in my life that I ever wanted to.
