Snow, Fjords and Northern Lights: Rahul’s Honeymoon Trip with Thrillophilia

Our honeymoon to Norway was a dream I didn’t even know I had until we started planning it. My wife and I had talked about visiting places we’d never been, and Norway was at the top of the list for its landscapes, incredible fjords, and of course, the Northern Lights. We wanted an adventure- something more than just relaxing on a beach- and Norway promised all that and more.

We arrived in Oslo on a chilly afternoon, and stepping out of the airport was like walking into a postcard. Snow was falling softly, and my wife squeezed my hand, eyes wide as she took it all in. I knew right then that this trip was going to be something special. We spent the first night wandering around the city, cozying up in little cafes, and warming up with hot cocoa. Oslo felt like the perfect introduction to Norway, but I knew the real adventure lay further north.

The next day, we hopped on a train to Tromsø, the “Gateway to the Arctic.” I remember looking at her as we were on that train, wrapped up in a blanket together, watching the scenery fly by. “Can you believe we’re here?” she asked, resting her head on my shoulder. I couldn’t; it was exactly like stepping into a fairytale.

Our first night in Tromsø, we had an exciting plan: our Northern Lights tour. We dressed in layers, our guide gave us thermal suits, and we set off into the Arctic wilderness. We waited under a blanket of stars, our breath fogging the chilly air, and then, as if on cue, there they were—the Northern Lights.

Swirling green and purple, shifting across the sky, it was the most surreal thing I had ever seen. “It’s like magic,” my wife whispered, her eyes shimmering with the lights and, I think, a few happy tears. I held her close, completely speechless. I don’t know how long we stood there, just the two of us under the Arctic sky, but I’ll never forget it.

The following day, we took a reindeer sledding tour with a local Sami guide. My wife, always an animal lover, was thrilled. The reindeer were calm and steady as we glided over the snowy terrain. I could see how happy she was, laughing as the reindeer pulled us along, her cheeks pink from the cold and excitement. Our guide even let her feed one of the reindeer afterward, which she couldn’t stop talking about for the rest of the day.

As we journeyed further into Norway, each new place seemed to one-up the last. In Lofoten, we stayed in a cozy little cabin right by the sea. The mountains loomed large around us, snow-capped and dramatic against the bright sky. One morning, I woke her up early, just as the sun was rising, casting a golden light over everything.

We walked hand-in-hand along the quiet shore, our footsteps the only sound, and it felt like we had the whole world to ourselves. At that moment, I think we both understood just how special this trip was. “We’re really far from Delhi,” she laughed, and I couldn’t help but smile, knowing exactly what she meant.

One of my favorite memories came during our fjord cruise. We boarded a boat that took us through the majestic fjords, winding through narrow passages with steep cliffs rising on either side. The sheer beauty of the landscape was overwhelming, and as we stood on the deck, the wind whipping through our hair, she looked up at me with a smile that said everything. I wrapped my arm around her, and we just enjoyed the ride, watching waterfalls cascade down the cliffs and eagles soaring above.

In Bergen, we took the Fløyen funicular up to the top of Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of the city. The view was stunning, with colorful buildings lining the harbor and mountains surrounding it all. We snapped a few pictures, but mostly we just soaked it in, trying to capture the memory instead of the photo. As we huddled together against the chill, I told her I’d remember this moment forever.

Every day seemed to bring something new. In Tromsø, we went on a snowshoeing adventure, and although we spent more time laughing at each other’s attempts to walk in the giant snowshoes, it turned out to be one of the most fun things we did. She managed to catch onto the rhythm way faster than I did, which she didn’t let me forget the entire day!

Our last night in Norway was back in Oslo, and we decided to make it special. We found a quiet restaurant with a view of the Oslofjord and toasted to the incredible journey we’d had. I looked across the table at her, the candlelight dancing on her face, and realized just how lucky I was to be here, with her, sharing these experiences that we would carry with us forever. We reminisced about our favorite parts of the trip- the Northern Lights, the fjords, the reindeer, the laughter, and the countless little moments in between.

As we packed up to leave the next morning, I felt a bittersweet mix of gratitude and sadness. We were going back to our lives in Delhi, but we were taking so much back with us. Norway had given us memories we’d cherish forever, stories we’d tell again and again. And more than anything, it had been the perfect start to our new life together.

On the plane home, she rested her head on my shoulder, eyes closed, a small smile on her lips. I held her hand, thinking about everything we’d seen, the beauty of Norway, and the moments that had brought us even closer. I knew this was just the end of our trip, but it felt like the perfect beginning.
