Kiran’s Grand Escape: Love and Legacy in the Heart of Rajasthan
The suitcase was still half-packed, but my heart was already full of memories from Rajasthan. My husband and I had always talked about experiencing the royal charm of this state, and it didn’t disappoint.
Every fort, every street, every meal told a story, and we were lucky enough to be part of it. Rajasthan swept us off our feet with its colors, culture, and incredible warmth. It wasn’t just a trip, it was a journey through time, tradition, and romance.

Wonders & Heritage of Rajasthan
Our first stop was Jaipur, the Pink City. As soon as we entered the city, the grandeur of Hawa Mahal caught our eye. Walking through its intricately designed windows, I couldn’t help but imagine the royal women who once gazed at the bustling streets below. Amber Fort was another highlight- its sprawling courtyards, intricate mirror work, and the stunning views of the Aravalli Hills left us awestruck.
From Jaipur, we traveled to Udaipur, the City of Lakes. The shimmering Lake Pichola, with the City Palace standing tall in the backdrop, was straight out of a postcard. We even took a romantic boat ride during sunset, and it felt like we were part of a royal love story.
Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh were next, each telling tales of valor and resilience. Chittorgarh’s massive fort was a labyrinth of history, and as we walked through its ruins, I could almost hear echoes of the past. Kumbhalgarh’s walls stretched endlessly, and climbing them felt like an adventure straight out of an epic saga.
Jodhpur, the Blue City, welcomed us with its vibrant houses and the imposing Mehrangarh Fort. The view from the top of the fort was breathtaking, and the stories narrated by the guide added depth to the experience. Finally, Jaisalmer, the Golden City, stole our hearts. The Jaisalmer Fort, with its golden hue under the sun, felt magical. Exploring the narrow alleys, lined with local shops and eateries, was an absolute delight.
Rajasthan’s Cultural Tapestry
Rajasthan’s culture is as vibrant as its architecture. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming “Padharo Mhare Desh.”
One evening in Udaipur, we attended a traditional Rajasthani dance performance at Bagore Ki Haveli. The swirling skirts, rhythmic beats, and soulful music were mesmerising.
Shopping was another adventure! Jaipur’s Johari Bazaar had the most exquisite jewelry, while Jodhpur’s markets offered vibrant textiles and handicrafts. I ended up buying a beautiful Bandhani saree and some handcrafted juttis.
In Jaisalmer, we indulged in a camel ride through the Thar Desert. Watching the sun dip below the dunes was a surreal experience. We also tried our hand at pottery in a local village near Chittorgarh, where the artisans patiently taught us the craft. It was humbling to see their dedication and skill.
The warmth and hospitality we experienced here were unparalleled. One instance that stood out happened during our visit to Jodhpur. We were exploring the bustling streets of the old city when we realised we had wandered way too far from our hotel. To make things worse, our phone batteries were almost dead, and we couldn’t rely on maps.
As we stood there trying to figure out our way, an elderly shopkeeper approached us. With a kind smile, he asked if we needed help. When we explained our predicament, he immediately offered us a chair in his tiny shop, poured us some refreshing chaas, and called his nephew, who spoke fluent English, to guide us. Not only did they help us with directions, but the nephew also insisted on dropping us back to our hotel on his bike.
This small yet heartfelt gesture left us deeply touched. I can proudly say that throughout our trip, the locals welcomed us with open arms, whether it was offering extra help while shopping or sharing stories of Rajasthan’s rich heritage. Their kindness made our journey even more memorable and reminded us that the true essence of Rajasthan lies in its people.
The Delicious Food of Rajasthan
If there’s one thing that Rajasthan boasts as spectacularly as its forts, is its food. Every city offered a culinary experience that left us craving more. In Jaipur, we started with Dal Baati Churma- a hearty, flavorful dish that was perfect after a day of exploring. The Ghevar we had at Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar was the sweetest ending to our day.
Udaipur introduced us to Gatte ki Sabzi and Ker Sangri, traditional dishes that were both unique and delicious. We also tried the famous Pyaaz Kachori at a local stall near the City Palace— it was crispy, spicy, and utterly satisfying.
Jodhpur was all about Mirchi Vada and Mawa Kachori, while in Jaisalmer, we savored the rich flavors of Laal Maas. Sitting under a starlit sky, enjoying a traditional Rajasthani thali in the desert, was an experience I’ll never forget. And let’s not forget the endless cups of masala chai and the refreshing lassi that kept us energized throughout the trip.
