Turkey Through Danish’s Eyes: A Solo Quest with Thrillophilia
Travelling has always been my one and only escape from the mundane reality of life. I had started travelling early, nearly when I was around 19 years of age. However, all my travel plans were either with family or with friends. I never really got a chance to discover the world on my own, even though that was truly what I wanted.
I may have been a little late in the game but I have surely made a huge leap as a solo traveller- Turkey. Before this trip, my close ones questioned me out of concern if I would be able to complete this solo journey that too in a different nation.
Honestly, even I had self-doubts at first but a huge shoutout to Thrillophilia for managing everything effortlessly so that I could successfully complete my first ever solo trip!
When the day of departure finally arrived, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. It was the first time I would be travelling alone, and even though I had planned everything down to the last detail, the unpredictability of solo travel made my heart race.
Navigating Through the Streets of Istanbul
My first few days were spent exploring Istanbul, a city where old traditions seamlessly blend with modernity. Walking down the cobblestone streets, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The tour of Istanbul was not only culturally enriching but also gave me a glimpse of how it looked in the past.
I got to explore so many wonderful landmarks of the city such as the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Mosque of Suleyman. Personally, one particular attraction that I loved the most was the iconic Blue Mosque. It is truly an architectural masterpiece which left me with a deep sense of tranquillity.
Not to forget, the beautiful Grand Bazaar was an amazing location to truly experience the vibrant local culture. Strolling through the bazaar, I got to interact with a few locals, admire the local craftsmanship and even grabbed a few snacks from the food stalls.
Solo Moments in Cappadocia
My days in Cappadocia were by far the best and most memorable for me. With its fairy chimneys, endless valleys and stunning rock formations, this city looked straight out of a dream.
I had one experience in mind that had been on my bucket list for years- the hot air balloon ride. As soon as the balloon ascended in the air, so did my excitement. It was a wonderful and one of a kind experience where I got to overlook Cappadocia’s stunning landscape. There were moments when we would rise above the clouds, and it felt like I was floating in the air.
This activity was the perfect combination of adventure and thrill that I needed in my life. And the best part? I was experiencing it alone, savouring every second without distractions.
I also did a wholesome sightseeing tour of Cappadocia in which I got to cover some exciting places like the Ihlara Valley, Fairy Chimneys and Goreme Valley. One attraction in Cappadocia that was absolutely incomparable was Kaymakli, an ancient underground city. Imagine, there used to be a whole different city underground back in those days, how fascinating is that!
Sailing Between Continents
Can you believe that because of this trip I got to experience a fun cruise ride in the middle of two continents?
As per the itinerary, my day 3 included a cruise ride on the famous Bosphorus Strait which lies in between the two continents, Europe and Asia. It was not only fun but also a very informational activity.
I passed through some of the beautiful palaces of sultans and the traditional wooden houses, along with a mesmerising view. The highlight was when I got to encounter a breathtaking sunset from the cruise, it was the perfect evening.
The cruise had also arranged a delicious dinner for the guests on board. Along with the dinner, we all got to enjoy a beautiful live performance by the local artists of Turkey.
The Local Flavours
Another highlight of my solo trip was indulging in Turkey’s incredible food scene. Honestly, Turkish food is an experience in itself. I still remember the flavours of the traditional meze platters, the smoky richness of the grilled meats, and the aromatic spices of Turkish tea.
Thanks to my solo adventure, I had the freedom and a little bit of extra leisure time to explore plenty of outdoor cafes and food stalls. I even utilised the extra time I had by learning the basic chaikhana (tea) etiquettes of the region. Rest of the time, I observed locals, watched them talk in their native language and tried to grasp a few local words.
The Unexpected Bonds
Even though I was travelling alone, I did not feel lonely even for a second on this entire journey. I always had great people around me who gave me company and helped make this solo journey a lot easier.
A heartfelt thanks to my guide who really went above and beyond for. Whether I needed a suggestion on the best eateries or how to spend my leisure time, he was my go-to person. He was available all the time, made this trip fun yet informative and helped me create some great unforgettable memories.
Additionally, one day while I was sitting in one of the cafes, I started having a conversation with an elderly. He grew so fond of me that he extended an invitation to his home and hosted a beautiful dinner for me.
I received such a warm welcome that I felt right at home. One of the best things was that I got to taste the authentic homemade dishes of Turkey which made this trip so much more amazing.
I have returned from this trip with a whole new identity. It is hard for me to believe that I have completed an international trip solo. But yes I did it! I guess Turkey is one of the best places to go on a solo trip. Additionally, after this experience, I will look forward to planning all my solo trips from Thrillophilia, knowing well that I will have someone to take care of me, even when I am far away from home.
